![]() For any Harmony Hub activity, you can create a friendly name that’s easier to say. You can also power on or off your TV, change your stereo settings, or trigger connected home activities that are controlled by the Harmony Hub. By connecting the Harmony Hub with Alexa, you can start or stop Harmony activities such as “Watch TV”, “Play a Game” or “Listen to some Music”. Thus far, Logitech has partnered with Amazon. With voice control and artificial intelligence transforming user interaction with the smart home, ambient voice solutions like Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, or (eventually) Cortana become a core ingredient if not the Hub itself. So, you are likely to need both a Harmony for our media center and an alternative solution for your connected home platform. Conversely, the Harmony Home Hub’s aspirations are under developed both in terms of capabilities and ecosystem support. None of these competitors match the Logitech Harmony for controlling all of your media devices, which works with over 270,000 devices. ![]() In addition to Logitech, Apple TV, Amazon Echo, Google Home, SmartThings, and Wink all aspire to be the one platform for the connected home. You can also expand the Hub’s smart home RF interoperability with the Harmony Home Extender, which adds Zigbee, Z-wave, and Z-wave Plus support. Notably, there is no IP control of Android TV settop boxes like the Nvidia Shield TV and Android TV TVs so you can’t do simple things like numeric input or use other keys on the Harmony remote. Logitech has added IP-based smart home functionality to the Hub though it still pales compared to the Simple Control app in this regard. As an early adopter, I deployed Smart Control in every room so that family and guests have a similar media consumption experience no matter what room they are in. If your toddler breaks a remote or it simply wears out from over use, then it costs about $30 to buy a replacement remote. I prefer the Harmony Companion with the simple remote because it is cheaper and easier to use. Logitech has rebranded the platform several times (the earliest version was the Harmony Smart Control) and expanded its capabilities beyond a unified remote for media to controlling the connected home. I’ll also note that the hub is slightly smaller than a Roku 4, and it’s a well-designed device that belongs right alongside your other entertainment devices. The Logitech Harmony Hub comes in the following flavors Harmony Hub, Harmony Companion, Harmony Pro, Harmony Pro. And what’s more, if you have an Amazon Echo (of course we do), you can set it to control the hub, using your voice to do everything.įinally, you can control all of these devices away from home thanks to the Harmony app, allowing you to turn on the coffee pot on your way home, unlock the door for your neighbor, or turn the air conditioning off so it’s nice and cool when you arrive after a long day of work. But you get the idea, right? You can create an unlimited number of custom activities to provide universal control for your home. Time to pwn noobs in Overwatchon your PS4? You can tap a button to turn the TV and PS4 on. Heading to bed? Tap the “Good Night” button to lock the doors, turn the lights off, and lower the temperature (smart thermostat required, of course). Ready to finally binge watch Stranger Things? Watch Netflix will dim the lights, lock the door, turn the TV on and open up Netflix for your viewing pleasure. What’s more, you’re able to create an unlimited number of activities that allows you to control numerous devices with just the tap of a single button. ![]() Its best feature is that it not only controls your TV and entertainment devices, but it can also control smart lights, locks, thermostats, and virtually any other smart home device. The Harmony Hub works with over 270,000 smart home and entertainment devices to make controlling them incredibly easy. But one of the coolest gadgets to surface in 2016 is the new Logitech Harmony Hub. You need a specific app for your Philips Hue lights, a specific Nest app, Roku remote, Apple TV remote, smart TV remote and app, and that’s just the start. But with all of the numerous wifi-connected devices and doohickies available already, controlling them all requires various different apps. In fact, we can’t wait for CES 2017 to see exactly what new products are coming. The smart home market grew tremendously in 2016, and we only see the number of smart home products growing significantly in 2017.
